In Germany, members of the Green Party have voiced a firm stand against the current level of support provided to Ukraine and issued a compelling call to the federal government to increase funding for military and humanitarian aid. Four parliamentarians, including Robin Wagener, Sara Nanni, Sebastian Sefer and Anton Hofreiter, addressed an open letter to Chancellor Friedrich Merz, demanding a revision and enhancement of the relevant budget allocations aimed at supporting Ukraine. They emphasized that the current situation is critically urgent due to widespread Russian shelling and missile strikes that devastate civilian infrastructure and cause human tragedies. According to the MPs, it is necessary not only to increase financial support but also to intensify efforts in air defense. They noted that their votes in the Bundestag previously enabled significant increases in defense spending, and now these mechanisms remain available for further activation in aid of Ukraine. The MPs recalled that during Olaf Scholz's previous government, Germany approved an additional three billion euros in military assistance to Ukraine for 2025, and plans for further aid in the subsequent years. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius confirmed that Germany pledged an additional 1.9 billion euros for arms and equipment in June. Given the current threats, activists and politicians argue that strengthening country’s air defense becomes crucial for countering Russian aggression and protecting Ukrainian civilians. Overall, the Green MPs’ strategy aims to foster a more effective and adaptable support system for Ukraine, encompassing financial and military aid, utilizing all legitimate means to influence the course of the ongoing conflict and ensure regional security.
