The European Union is making a significant leap forward in its climate policy by announcing an ambitious long-term target — to cut greenhouse gas emissions by an extraordinary 90% compared to 1990 levels by the year 2040. This initiative was officially proposed by the European Commission on July 2nd with the aim not only to mitigate environmental impact but also to strengthen the bloc's economic and energy independence. Climate Commissioner Vopke Hoekstra emphasized that this goal is not merely aspirational but essential for protecting citizens from the devastating effects of global warming and extreme weather events. "Today, we have taken a critical step forward," he stated. "Reducing emissions by 90% by 2040 is not only about safeguarding our planet but also about ensuring a more stable and secure future for our people and economies. Along with climate protection, this strategy enhances our resilience and independence from external energy sources, fostering competitiveness. Moreover, it provides an opportunity to prevent catastrophic economic losses, such as the 11% GDP decline seen in Slovenia after destructive floods, a stark example of climate change impacts across Europe. Once this proposal is approved, the European Commission will submit it to the European Parliament and the Council of the EU for discussion and ratification through the standard legislative process. This step aligns with the broader goals outlined in the EU Climate Law, which commits to making Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050, and sets a preliminary target of reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030. The new 2040 target is a strategic continuation in the EU’s comprehensive approach to climate action. Recent events, such as the closure of iconic tourist sites like the Eiffel Tower observation deck due to extreme heatwaves in Paris and the suspension of activities at the Atomium in Brussels, vividly underscore the urgency of adopting stronger climate measures. The EU’s decisive move aims at both environmental preservation and safeguarding societal and economic stability against worsening climate risks.
