Main Intelligence Directorate Identifies Russian Military Personnel Responsible for the Sumy Missile Attack That Resulted in Civilian Deaths
Based on gathered intelligence and investigative efforts, the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine's Ministry of Defense has disclosed detailed information regarding individuals involved in the tragic missile attack on the city of Sumy on June 3, 2025. This strike, which claimed the lives of six civilians and injured 29 others, is yet another demonstration of the ongoing military aggression by Russian forces. According to intelligence sources, the attack was carried out using a BM-21 'Grad' multiple rocket launcher system, which has been identified as part of the 30th Motorized Rifle Regiment based in Kursk Oblast, Russia. Key figures implicated include the artillery commander of the regiment, Damir Garnaev from Penza, and the commander of the rocket artillery battery, Dmytro Volobuyev from Samara. Authorities also identified the commanders responsible for the missile launch calculations involved in the attack. The incident was preceded by a missile strike around 9:20 AM on June 3, when Russian forces fired from multiple rocket launchers into the city center, causing eight hits, damaging 16 buildings—including residential complexes and a hospital—and disabling railway tracks. Among the injured are three children, youngest just three years old. The attack starkly highlights the brutal nature of Russia’s military operations and underscores the urgent need for international response and strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
