In a recent decision, the Latvian government approved the transfer of 42 Patria 6x6 armored personnel carriers and additional military equipment to strengthen Ukraine's armed forces amid ongoing conflict with Russia. On July 1, the Cabinet of Ministers sanctioned this aid, which was initially ordered at the beginning of 2023 and is now moving towards deployment. Latvian Defense Minister Andris Sprūds assured that the first vehicles would be dispatched soon, reaffirming Latvia's commitment to supporting Ukraine both this year and in the upcoming year by providing military assistance amounting to 0.25% of the country's gross domestic product. The Latvian Defense Ministry emphasized that deploying these 42 BTRs would not compromise Latvia's own military capabilities or operational readiness. The Patria APCs are a product of a joint initiative involving Finland, Latvia, Sweden, and Germany, with manufacturing taking place in Finland and Latvia, ensuring compliance with modern security standards. Latvia has a history of contributing military aid to Ukraine, including the recent shipment of 1,500 drones in April, reflecting its unwavering support against Russian aggression. This strategic partnership underscores the Baltic region’s collective effort to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities and maintain regional stability amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
