Ukrainian Foreign Ministry insists on the return of detained Ukrainian citizen from Italy
Ukraine is actively responding to the situation involving the detention of Ukrainian citizen Sergii Kuznetsov in Italy, expressing unequivocal support for his legal rights and interests.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes its focus on close cooperation with Italian and German law enforcement agencies within the framework of the investigation related to the Nord Stream pipeline sabotage.
According to official information, Ukraine’s diplomatic service is not only providing comprehensive consular assistance to the detainee but also maintaining constant dialogue with relevant authorities with the primary goal of ensuring his repatriation.
On November 5, the suspect announced a hunger strike, raising concerns within diplomatic circles.
In response, Ukrainian consular officials in Milan met with him to assess his health condition, conditions of detention, and to reassure him of support.
The Ministry also states that it continues to vigorously advocate for the legal rights of the citizen and works to ensure all proper procedures are followed.
Additionally, Ukraine emphasizes its willingness to cooperate with German and Italian partners but insists that the return of the Ukrainian citizen and adherence to international norms remain paramount.
Sergii Kuznetsov was detained on August 21 in a hotel near Rimini at the request of German authorities, linked to the explosions on the Nord Stream pipelines.
His detention has become part of international legal processes — after an Italian court ordered his extradition to Germany, the Ukrainian defense filed an appeal, and a subsequent decision annulled the extradition ruling, offering hope for his return to Ukraine.
