India Significantly Reduces Russian Oil Imports: Controversial Trump Statements

Chas Pravdy - 06 November 2025 23:35

In light of recent geopolitical developments and the US sanctions imposed against Russian energy giants such as Rosneft and Lukoil, India’s energy sector has markedly decreased its imports of Russian crude oil.

Former US President Donald Trump announced that, despite India’s official stance of halting purchases from Russia, the country continues to buy Russian energy resources through alternative suppliers not subject to sanctions.

Trump emphasized that negotiations between him and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are progressing positively, and he has extended an invitation to Modi to visit the United States, while receiving an invite to visit India himself.

According to Trump, Modi ‘largely ceased buying oil from Russia,’ although Indian companies, including Indian Oil Corp, have already purchased five shipments of Russian oil from sanctioned-free suppliers, with supplies expected to arrive in December.

Experts believe that despite official statements, Russia and its energy companies still maintain strong export positions in the Indian and Chinese markets, ensuring stable supply volumes despite the sanctions pressure.
