Germany Faces Political Storm Over Allegations of Espionage Linked to Alternative for Germany

Chas Pravdy - 06 November 2025 01:37

Tensions are mounting in Germany as the far-right political party Alternative for Germany (AfD) finds itself under serious suspicion of conducting clandestine activities in favor of Russia.

According to sources within the German parliament, the Bundestag’s defense committee has publicly stated that members of AfD are systematically attempting to acquire classified information about the country’s military capabilities and security infrastructure.

These actions raise significant concerns of espionage, especially given the party’s recent focus on Germany’s military strength and vulnerabilities.

Official reports suggest that representatives of AfD, particularly through parliamentary inquiries, are seeking to gather data that could be valuable to foreign intelligence agencies, notably Russia.

The focus areas include cybersecurity gaps, drone defense, and the protection of critical infrastructure, with 27 questions already posed by AfD deputies aiming to uncover weaknesses within the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ cybersecurity system.

Military experts and defense officials confirm that these efforts appear to be deliberate and coordinated, instilling worry about potential security threats.

Meanwhile, AfD leader Bernd Baumann dismisses these accusations, claiming that the investigations are merely aimed at identifying possible deficiencies in Germany’s military and infrastructure.

The debate over a potential ban on the party has intensified, especially after the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) proposed establishing a special task force to consider such measures.

These developments are set to influence Germany’s political landscape significantly as authorities continue to scrutinize the activities of AfD members.
