Estonia Takes Precautionary Measure Against Pro-Russian Propagandist Besedin
In Estonia, the case against well-known pro-Russian blogger Oleg Besedin has concluded with a preventive measure.
On November 4, he was detained on suspicion of activity aimed against state security and violating international sanctions.
The Harju District Court on November 5 decided to remand the suspect in custody for two months, citing risks of flight abroad and the possibility of continuing criminal activities.
According to investigators, Besedin actively collaborated with individuals from Russia involved in information influence operations, and his content was intentionally aimed at influencing public opinion in Estonia and beyond.
During a search of his residence, authorities found hundreds of thousands of Russian rubles.
Besedin denied his guilt in court.
As per the investigation, he had been cooperating with Russian intelligence agencies since 2022, spreading materials subject to EU sanctions.
Such actions are considered violations of international sanctions and crimes against peace.
The charges are based on two articles of the Estonian Penal Code, which foresees imprisonment from two to fifteen years or fines.
Authorities are concerned that if released, Besedin might continue his activities due to maintained contacts in Russia and family in Estonia, although there is a risk of flight.
Recent developments exemplify Estonia’s active stance to counteract propaganda activities financed from Russia, aiming to safeguard national security against such interference.
