Italy Responds to Zakharova’s Comment on Rome Tower Collapse: Diplomatic Tensions and Political Implications
In an unexpected move, Italian diplomatic circles issued a sharp condemnation of Russian spokesperson Maria Zakharova following her disgraceful remarks regarding the massive collapse of the medieval Torre dei Conti tower in Rome.
Italy’s Foreign Ministry summoned Russian Ambassador Alexei Paramonov for an official consultation, criticizing Zakharova’s words as “horrific and troubling,” which they argued, confirmed the level of vulgarity and audacity of the Russian leadership.
The incident—a partial collapse of a historic structure during reconstruction—became a subject of international concern after several workers were injured, including one seriously, while two others suffered minor injuries; one remained beneath debris, conscious.
Italy’s MFA emphasized that Zakharova’s statements and interpretation of the event demonstrate profound ignorance and indifference to the suffering of the Italian people, condemning the exploitation of tragedy for political and propagandist purposes.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani described Zakharova’s behavior as “shameful and unacceptable in a civilized modern country.” Italy reaffirmed its firm support for Ukraine amid ongoing hardships, calling for mutual respect in international relations and emphasizing that the country would always stand in solidarity with those fighting for freedom and peace, regardless of political differences.
