Italian President Urges Europe to Intensify Efforts Against Russian Threat
The President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, issued a crucial call to European nations to strengthen their collective defense efforts amidst increasing Russian threats stemming from the relentless and bloody conflict in Ukraine.
He emphasized that resolving this crisis requires the development of more modern and effective collective European defense forces, which should become a vital part of NATO and ensure regional security.
Mattarella pointed out that current conflicts in Europe and the Mediterranean threaten regional stability and undermine the post-war security system, testing the institutions established to safeguard it.
During his speech, dedicated to the National Unity Day and the Italian Armed Forces, he highlighted the importance of united efforts to bolster military resilience.
The Corriere della Sera newspaper notes that lately, Mattarella has been increasingly vocal about the need to enhance Europe’s defense capabilities, advocating for technological advancement and increased combat readiness, which are essential for future stability.
This signals a push toward European cooperation aimed at creating more modern, well-organized defense forces capable of confronting contemporary threats, particularly related to Russian aggression.
It is also worth noting that Italy’s Defense Minister recently stated that Ukraine cannot reconquer territories occupied after February 2022, indicating the military realities of the ongoing conflict.
Furthermore, Italy’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian ambassador following controversial comments by Maria Zakharova regarding the collapse of a medieval tower in Rome, reflecting heightened tensions on the international stage.
