New Czech Government: Will Support for Ukraine Persist Amid Political Shifts?

Chas Pravdy - 03 November 2025 16:45

The formation of a new government in the Czech Republic has sparked significant international interest and concern due to its composition and policy trajectory, which appears to diverge from previously held pro-Ukraine stances.

The coalition, built on unexpected alliances including the far-right party ‘Freedom and Direct Democracy’ (SPD), nationalist ‘Motors’ party, and the longstanding political figure Andrej Babiš’s ‘ANO’, now holds a majority with 108 of 200 seats in parliament.Experts suggest that despite the political upheaval, support for Ukraine is likely to remain at current levels.

Notably, Babiš’s party, with 80 seats, is considered the most moderate among coalition partners and opposes referendums on leaving the EU and NATO, emphasizing continued assistance to Ukrainian refugees and humanitarian aid.

Conversely, other coalition members have expressed intentions to reduce social benefits and tighten support mechanisms for Ukrainian migrants. The Czech President Petr Pavel tasked Babiš with forming the new government, despite fears among analysts of potential conflicts of interest given Babiš’s business background.

The future Minister of Foreign Affairs, Filip Turek, drew scandal criticism for racist, sexist, and homophobic comments on social media but maintains denial of direct involvement. The new government plans to revise policies related to temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees and intends to cut social payments and aid, raising concerns about the future of Czech-Ukrainian relations.

Whether this government will maintain Ukraine’s support amid these changes remains uncertain, impacting regional security and diplomatic dynamics in the region.
