Tragedy in Mexico: supermarket fire claims at least 23 lives during Day of the Dead celebrations
In the city of Hermosillo, located in the Mexican state of Sonora, a devastating fire broke out in a local supermarket, resulting in the death of at least 23 people, including several children.
In addition to the numerous fatalities, around ten individuals were injured during the horrific event.
The incident occurred amidst the celebration of Día de los Muertos — one of Mexico’s most significant and honored traditional holidays.
According to Sonora’s governor Alfonso Durazo, authorities have ordered an extensive and transparent investigation to determine the causes of the fire.
Preliminary reports suggest that most of the victims died from inhaling toxic smoke, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
The governor also stated that the primary hypothesis is an electrical short circuit, with no evidence pointing to a deliberate attack.
Over 40 rescue workers and 10 emergency vehicles participated in firefighting and relief efforts.
Experts are also checking if an explosion took place inside the building during the incident.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and announced that aid groups have been dispatched to Hermosillo to support those affected and the victims’ relatives.
While the fire has been extinguished, the exact cause remains under investigation, and authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
