Berlin Brandenburg Airport Temporarily Closed Due to Unknown Drone and Rising Security Incidents in Europe

Chas Pravdy - 01 November 2025 06:33

Flights at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) were delayed for nearly two hours on Friday evening following the detection of an unknown drone near the runway.

The incident is part of a broader trend of increasing security threats involving unmanned aerial vehicles across Europe.

According to sources, numerous flights were rerouted to alternative airports such as Hamburg and Leipzig to ensure safety.

Airport officials emphasized that passenger and staff safety remain their top priorities, prompting such precautionary measures in suspicious situations.

Regular operations resumed around 10 PM local time after investigations confirmed the absence of further threat.

The police deployed a helicopter to assess the scene and gather intelligence.

This is not an isolated case — earlier in October, drones of unidentified origin disrupted operations at Munich’s second-largest airport, resulting in delays and cancellations.

The number of incidents caused by such unmanned aircraft has been growing steadily: by the end of August 2025, more than 144 disruptions had been reported across Germany, compared to 113 in 2024 and 99 in 2023.

Authorities are calling for stricter controls and new measures to combat illegal drone activity to enhance aviation safety and protect citizens from potential dangers.
