Chinese Leader Xi Jinping Prepares for High-Level Meetings Amid Global Trade Shifts

Chas Pravdy - 31 October 2025 06:33

In the international political arena, significant upcoming meetings are set to feature China’s prominent leader, President Xi Jinping.

These discussions will take place ahead of negotiations with Canadian, Japanese, and Thai officials, against the backdrop of recent temporary trade agreements that have notable implications for global supply chains and economies.

Following US President Donald Trump’s visit to Korea and his participation in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, China solidified agreements aimed at easing restrictions on the export of rare earth elements, which are vital to modern technology industries.

This move is crucial in efforts to stabilize and safeguard global trade networks amid unpredictable shifts in international relations.

The summit, hosted in the city of Gyeongju, involves 21 participating countries seeking pathways to reduce trade barriers and foster more favorable conditions for international cooperation, although not all resolutions are binding.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in emphasized in his speech that the global economy is undergoing profound transformations, and increasing political and economic uncertainty could impact trade and investment.

As Donald Trump departs for the US, international focus shifts to Xi Jinping’s upcoming meetings with Japan’s newly elected Prime Minister Sannae Takaichi.

The appointment of Takaichi, known for her nationalist views and strict security policies, might influence regional relations, adding complexity to diplomatic dynamics.

Additionally, Japan’s accelerated military buildup to deter China’s territorial ambitions, along with trade restrictions involving China, contribute to regional tensions.

These developments collectively shape a tense diplomatic environment that significantly impacts regional stability and economic growth.
