US Lifts Sanctions on Former Republika Srpska Leader Milorad Dodik

Chas Pravdy - 29 October 2025 18:45

On Monday, the United States Department of the Treasury officially announced the removal of sanctions against the former president and key political figure of Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik.

This decision came as a surprise to many analysts and diplomats, as Dodik had previously been under strict sanctions due to actions perceived as destabilizing for the Bosnia and Herzegovina region.According to official US Treasury information, over twenty individuals and companies, including Dodik himself, his close circle, and family members, were removed from the sanctions list.

Notably, Nenan Stevandić, the speaker of the Republika Srpska parliament, was also removed.

More than ten companies linked to Dodik’s political network were also delisted.

Overall, the sanctions were lifted for 48 individuals and entities previously suspected of destabilizing the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and undermining the Dayton Accords.US officials did not specify the reasons behind the removal of Dodik and his allies from the sanctions list.

In 2025, Dodik was also convicted for contempt of international authorities, which led to his removal from the presidency of Republika Srpska.

The move raises questions about the fairness and future of sanctions policy, as well as the prospects for the former leader’s political future. This decision by the US primarily carries political motives and raises numerous questions about the rules of the game in regional and international relations concerning Bosnia and the stability of the Balkans.
