U.S. Government Shutdown Continues as Senate Fails to Pass Funding Bill

Chas Pravdy - 28 October 2025 22:49

The United States is once again facing a political crisis that has led to a prolonged government shutdown.

On Tuesday, the Senate was unable to pass the necessary funding legislation, marking the fourth week of the impasse.

The vote ended with a tally of 54 in favor and 45 against, making this the thirteenth shutdown in U.S.

history, reflecting serious political tensions in the country.

The situation is particularly dire concerning the funding of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

In a few days, this critical aid program could run out of funds, posing serious hardships for millions of families nationwide.

The federal workers’ union has called for an urgent bipartisan compromise.

Republican senators have proposed various solutions, including a bill sponsored by Senator Josh Hawley that would ensure SNAP funding irrespective of overall budget disagreements.

There are also initiatives to pay salaries to federal employees on forced leave or performing critical tasks.

Some Democrats have expressed willingness to support these measures, recognizing the importance of preventing further hardship for the population.

Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris announced that the Biden administration has found a way to pay military personnel this Friday, though details remain undisclosed.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer stated that Democrats will introduce a bill to fund the WIC program, aiding women, infants, and children.

On the diplomatic front, President Trump met with Japan’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Sane Takaiți, just days after taking office.

Praising her leadership, Trump said, “If I can help Japan in any way — we will be there.

We are close allies at the highest level.” This meeting underscores the importance of maintaining regional stability and strengthening strategic cooperation amid ongoing political tensions and global challenges.
