NATO Launches Major Experiment in Latvia to Test Cutting-Edge Defense Technologies

Chas Pravdy - 28 October 2025 00:23

Member countries of NATO, including Latvia, have initiated the largest military experiment to date, focusing on researching and testing advanced defense systems.

The event, named the ‘Digital Backbone Experiment’ (DiBaX), started on October 27 and will continue until November 7 at the Aizkraukle military base near Riga.

According to the Latvian Ministry of Defense, during this operation, various types and sizes of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) will be deployed across the country, including near the Estonian border.Local residents have been advised not to worry if they observe drones and to follow official updates on social media.

Representatives of the defense department emphasized that this year’s main focus is on utilizing unmanned systems in complex combat conditions and employing artificial intelligence for target detection and enhancing situational awareness.

Latvian Defense Minister, Andris Sprucs, highlighted that DiBaX is the only experiment of its kind of this scale conducted by NATO, and Latvia has been hosting such initiatives for four consecutive years.During the experiment, the latest technological solutions will be demonstrated and tested in real operational scenarios.

The primary goals are to increase the efficiency of military forces and improve their interoperability within the Alliance.

Earlier reports indicated that Latvia has prohibited irregular transportation to Russia and Belarus, highlighting increased regional security concerns.
