Mysteries of Ancient Cosmic Impacts: How a Crater in China Holds Secrets of the Past

Chas Pravdy - 28 October 2025 07:26

A mysterious crater in Guangdong Province, China, has opened new horizons for scientists by uncovering a history of ancient cosmic events that may have reshaped the landscape and influenced local ecosystems.

According to research, this giant crater, approximately 800 meters in diameter and located near the city of Zhaoqing, was formed around 10,000 years ago.

Geological studies suggest that it was likely created by the impact of a celestial object about 30 meters across, resulting in a massive explosion comparable to dozens of atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima.

Such an event could have had catastrophic effects on the local environment, destroying landscapes and altering natural ecosystems.

Dr.

Chen Min from the Center for Advanced Research in High-Pressure Science and Technology explained that the energy released during the impact was equivalent to 600,000 tons of TNT.

To confirm the extraterrestrial origin, scientists analyzed quartz samples from the site for microscopic glassy plaques—signs of planar deformation caused by extreme pressure and temperature during the impact.

By studying the crater’s geology and erosion levels, researchers estimated its age, although precise dating requires further analysis through radiocarbon methods.

Additionally, scientists from the Carnegie Institute recently discovered a new asteroid near Earth, designated 2025 SC79, belonging to the Atira group, emphasizing humanity’s increasing interest in space bodies and potential threats from space.
