Latvia Uncovers Large-Scale Russian Arson Network Targeting Critical Infrastructure

Chas Pravdy - 28 October 2025 01:32

In recent months, Latvia has taken a leading role in countering Russian sabotage activities by exposing an organized group involved in arson of the country’s critical infrastructure.

According to the State Security Service (VDD), this group acted on behalf of Russian intelligence agencies, aiming to destabilize key facilities that ensure Latvia’s energy and military security.

Official reports indicate that criminal proceedings were initiated as early as June 10, 2024, and subsequently, three suspects were detained, with a fourth already in custody for an unrelated crime.

The investigation revealed that in September 2023, the suspects set fire to a private enterprise engaged in defense-related projects, posing serious risks to national security.

Furthermore, at the end of last year, the group planned to set fire to a truck with Ukrainian plates on an infrastructure site, conducting reconnaissance through photo and video recordings.

The Security Service uncovered that the suspects had scouted several other potential targets, sharing their findings via photos and videos with Russian organizers.

Preventive measures, including arrests, have been implemented against three individuals, highlighting the scale and seriousness of the operation.

Meanwhile, Latvia continues strengthening its defense capabilities, participating in the NATO’s major experiment testing new military technologies since early 2024, responding to regional security challenges.

Additionally, the country has banned irregular transportation routes to Russia and Belarus, as part of its broader efforts to counter espionage and sabotage threats.

Latvia’s proactive stance underscores its commitment to maintaining stability and security amid increasing international security challenges.
