EU estimates over 4.7 million Ukrainian refugees currently receiving temporary protection
According to EU Special Representative for Ukrainians Ilva Johansson, approximately 4.7 million Ukrainian refugees reside within the European Union.
This figure, as she explained, represents those who have obtained temporary protection in EU member states, and it continues to increase in real-time.
Every week, new applications for temporary protection are submitted by Ukrainian citizens, contributing to the rising numbers.
Johansson emphasized that although this protection is temporary, the EU is preparing to transition to a new phase of cooperation with Ukrainians.
Currently, the focus is shifting from mere protection to partnership, including the integration of Ukrainian diaspora communities in Europe and the gradual return to normal life in Ukraine.
In July, the European Council extended the directive on temporary protection for Ukrainians in the EU until March 2027.
When this protection expires, Ukrainians will be able to return home with ease or change their status based on new mechanisms and policies developed in Brussels.
