US anticipates Hungary will shift away from Russian oil and gas: a step towards Europe’s energy independence

Chas Pravdy - 27 October 2025 08:18

The United States has expressed confidence that Hungary will soon abandon its dependence on Russian oil and gas, aligning with a broader European movement toward energy independence.

U.S.

NATO envoy Matthew Vitaker stated that Washington is actively working on developing a strategic plan for countries such as Hungary, Slovakia, and Turkey to reduce their reliance on Russian energy supplies, offering assistance in implementing alternative sources.

Vitaker emphasized that, unlike many neighboring countries, Hungary has yet to formulate specific measures or plans for diversifying its energy sources.

He assured that the U.S.

will continue efforts alongside the Hungarian government and regional partners, including Croatia, to diminish dependencies on Russian energy resources and promote regional stability and security.
