Lithuania Fully Closes Border with Belarus in Response to Dangerous Meteoids
Amid recent incidents involving unidentified meteoids, the Lithuanian government has decided to completely close its border with Belarus.
Prime Minister Inga Rūgienė announced this measure during a press conference, stating that the border closure comes into effect immediately and will be in place for an indefinite period.
According to her, this decisive step is a response to the increasing number of hybrid attacks and disruptive incidents caused by unknown objects, notably meteoids, which are traditionally used for meteorological purposes but have now become a source of tension.
At the same time, the Prime Minister emphasized that exceptions will be made for diplomats, EU citizens returning home, and diplomatic mail.
All other border crossings will be suspended to prevent potential hybrid provocations.
Additionally, starting Monday, Lithuanian military forces will employ specialized weapons and technologies to intercept and destroy incoming projectiles, and are already tracking their flight paths for better coordination of actions.
Rūgienė noted that this approach will help the country respond more swiftly to emerging threats and enhance national security amid rising tensions at the border.
