Ukraine Officially Switches to Winter Time: Details and History

Chas Pravdy - 26 October 2025 03:24

With the arrival of autumn, Ukraine has once again reverted to switching clocks to winter time, a common practice in most countries around the world aimed at optimizing daylight usage and conserving energy.

At 4 AM on Sunday, October 29, Ukrainians set their clocks back by one hour, effectively adjusting the time during the night.

This information was reported by ‘Ukrainian Truth’.

Simultaneously, this change automatically added an extra hour to the day, marking an important moment for the country’s residents.

Previously, details of this change were also published in ‘UP.

Life’.

Modern gadgets with automatic time updates have independently adjusted their clocks according to the new settings.

According to Ukrainian legislation, the transition between summer and winter time is regulated by a resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated May 13, 1996.

According to this regulation, Ukrainians are required to change their clocks twice a year: in the last Sunday of March to switch to summer time, and in October to revert to winter time.

The first such shift took place in 1981, when Ukraine was part of the USSR, aiming to improve energy efficiency and make better use of daylight.

Despite the Ukrainian Parliament supporting Bill No.

4201 in 2024, which proposed abolishing seasonal time changes, the president did not sign the document, leaving the current rules in place.

Currently, more than 60 countries worldwide, including nearly all European nations, observe the time change.

However, Russia has decided not to switch clocks, in line with its policy, including occupied territories where the practice is not implemented.
