Chas Pravdy - 25 October 2025 06:20

As part of his scheduled diplomatic visit to the Indo-Pacific region, former U.S.

President Donald Trump intends to bring up the topic of importing Russian oil.

According to sources within the White House, he aims to discuss this issue with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, emphasizing the importance of economic cooperation amid current geopolitical challenges.

Trump has been briefed on three possible sanctions scenarios against Russia and will focus discussions on trade, access to critical minerals, and strengthening economic ties between the U.S.

and China.

Meanwhile, diplomatic sources note that Trump remains a proponent of a ‘strategy of strategic ambiguity’ regarding Taiwan, which could influence the nature of his meetings.

The visit is scheduled for October 30 and is set against a backdrop of regional tension, as the tour includes countries such as Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea.

It is worth mentioning that following U.S.

sanctions against Russian companies like Rosneft and Lukoil, Chinese state oil companies have significantly reduced their maritime purchases of Russian oil.

Additionally, Indian refineries are expected to sharply cut their crude oil imports from Russia, affecting the global energy market.
