U.S. Senate Moves Toward Official Recognition of Russia as a State Sponsor of Terrorism and Tightens Sanctions

The United States is witnessing significant political developments that could dramatically alter Russia’s international status.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee has unanimously approved three bipartisan bills aimed at officially designating Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism.

These measures pave the way for comprehensive sanctions and the freezing of Russian assets within the U.S.

The legislation particularly emphasizes the urgent need to address the issue of Ukrainian children kidnapped by Russian forces — within 60 days of enactment, the U.S.

Secretary of State must report to Congress on efforts to return these children.

If Russia fails to prove that the children are reunited with their families or guardians, it could be swiftly declared a state sponsor of terrorism.

Additionally, the bills include provisions to confiscate and transfer Russian assets frozen in the U.S., totaling approximately $5 billion, with $250 million allocated to Ukraine every quarter.

Another key piece of legislation aims to impose strict barriers on China’s support for Moscow — extending sanctions and restricting financial channels that enable China to export weapons and dual-use technologies to Russia.

These initiatives are part of a broader strategy by the U.S.

to strengthen its position amid growing Russian-Chinese military cooperation, which raises concerns on the global stage.
