Trump hopes new oil sanctions will make Putin act more rationally and help end the Ukraine war
Former U.S.
President Donald Trump expressed hope that the recently imposed sanctions against Russian oil companies would have a significant impact and potentially compel the Kremlin to change its behavior, especially regarding the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
During a meeting at the White House with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump emphasized that the sanctions are very strict and target two of Russia’s largest oil corporations — “Rosneft” and “Lukoil.” He stated that these measures aim to reduce the war, which has already caused thousands of military and civilian casualties on both sides.
Trump expressed optimism that these sanctions might push Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky to sit down at the negotiating table, although he acknowledged that this is a difficult task due to the deep animosity between the leaders.
He also pointed out that the decision to impose these sanctions was long overdue and forms part of his broader strategy to end wars worldwide.
The American politician stressed that the time to act has come, and he is confident that these active measures will help resolve global conflicts.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte supported this initiative, calling the sanctions a strong signal to Moscow and additional pressure to encourage Russia to agree to a ceasefire and begin negotiations.
These actions, according to him, can alter the balance of power and motivate Russia to seek a diplomatic solution to the conflict.
