British Navy intercepts Russian military vessel near UK waters
A recent incident in the North Sea has garnered international attention as a Royal Navy destroyer intercepted and tracked the Russian military ship ‘Vice-Admiral Kulakov’ during its passage through British waters.
This marked the first operation under the command of NATO’s Joint Maritime Force, where a Royal Navy vessel was directly operating under Alliance command.
The operation was supported by a Wildcat helicopter, emphasizing its significance and complexity.
The mission lasted from Friday to Sunday and involved the use of advanced sensors to accurately monitor the vessel’s movement through the English Channel toward Wissant Island in France.
In addition to the British destroyer, a Dutch Air Force NH90 helicopter and ships of the French Navy also participated.
NATO’s Combined Maritime Command headquarters is located in Northwood, Middlesex.
Following this operation, the UK government disclosed details amid recent reports that Ukraine had used British Storm Shadow cruise missiles to attack a chemical plant within Russian territory.
The UK authorized Ukraine to use these missiles in Russia last year, with the first known strikes occurring in November, signaling a shift in the geopolitical landscape.
