Belgium plays a pivotal role in EU negotiations on the use of Russian assets in the context of sanctions agreements
Amid recent discussions within the European Union, Belgium has taken an active stance regarding the easing of conclusions from the summit related to the use of frozen Russian assets.
According to Bloomberg and sources, the country questions the rigidity of existing decisions and insists that the European Commission first analyze the mechanisms for their implementation.
During the latest consultations at the European Council, held on Thursday, Belgian representatives emphasized the need to examine legal aspects and potential steps for utilizing assets to support Ukraine and other goals outlined in the EU sanctions policy.
These positions reflect a desire for flexibility in applying sanctions and seeking a compromise, which could influence future decisions on the confiscation and use of assets from pro-Russian countries within the EU’s common foreign policy framework.
