Meloni affirms Italy’s readiness to assist in Gaza reconstruction and promote peace in the Middle East

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni confirmed her government’s willingness to actively participate in the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip and to support Palestinian police and political leaders in preparing for future challenges.

Speaking before the Italian Senate on October 22, she emphasized that her country aims to facilitate the achievement of just and lasting peace in the Middle East, which remains one of the most complex international issues of our time.

Meloni described the ceasefire, announced earlier this month to end the two-year conflict between Israel and Hamas, as very fragile, urging the global community to do everything possible to maintain it with patience and determination.

She conveyed her intention to propose support to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas during an upcoming meeting in Rome in early November, where they plan to discuss the reconstruction of destroyed territories and regional stabilization.

Given growing public dissatisfaction with Italy’s support for Israel — resulting in nationwide strikes and increased calls for recognition of Palestinian statehood — the government is exploring diplomatic avenues toward formal recognition of Palestine as part of a broader peace process.

Meloni also highlighted Italy’s pragmatic role in diplomatic efforts, thanking U.S.

President Donald Trump and mediators from Egypt and Qatar for their active engagement in brokering ceasefire agreements.

Additionally, Italy has been involved in training Palestinian police forces in Jericho through its Carabinieri units and participates in European missions at the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza.

The country provides humanitarian aid, assisting in evacuations and supporting Palestinians seeking education in Italian universities.

Meloni previously condemned the “unjustified” killing of journalists in Gaza during an Israeli attack on Nasser Hospital, which resulted in at least 20 casualties, including five media workers.

This tragic event underscores the precarious and sensitive nature of the regional crisis, necessitating concerted international efforts grounded in patience, diplomacy, and shared responsibility.
