Ukraine and European Allies Advocate for Immediate Ceasefire on Frontlines of the Russia-Ukraine Conflict
On Tuesday, October 21, the international community witnessed a significant diplomatic statement issued jointly by Ukraine and key European Union countries, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and others.
They collectively expressed support for the call made by U.S.
President Donald Trump for an immediate ceasefire and stabilization of the current frontline, which could serve as a foundation for future negotiations.
The joint declaration, signed by leaders such as Zelensky, Starmer, Merz, Macron, Meloni, and representatives of the European Commission and Council, highlights the urgent need to reduce tensions and pursue peaceful resolution of the conflict.Zelensky and the European leaders emphasized that a ceasefire should be the first step toward comprehensive negotiations, advocating for an end to hostilities on the present front lines.
They also underscored the importance of intensifying economic sanctions on Russia, notably through the use of frozen assets to secure resources necessary for Ukraine’s defense.At the end of the week, EU leaders will gather at a summit to discuss further support measures for Ukraine and bolster sanctions against Russia.
Zelensky plans to participate in this meeting scheduled for Friday, October 24, in London.Simultaneously, talks are underway regarding a potential meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest.
This meeting takes place amid Russia’s demands for Ukraine to cede some temporarily occupied territories prior to ceasefire agreements, while Kyiv and its partners strongly call for an immediate end to hostilities and the start of genuine negotiations.
Trump has already proposed a ceasefire along the current frontlines following his meeting with Zelensky at the White House on October 17.
