Donald Trump Announces Timeline for Trip to China
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, revealed during a meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Monday his intention to undertake a significant diplomatic visit to China.
According to Trump, the trip is scheduled for early next year and is likely to coincide with the ASEAN summit in South Korea, where he plans to meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
The agenda includes discussions on escalating trade tensions, following recent threats by Trump to impose a 100% tariff on Chinese imports starting in early November.
This move marks a sharp escalation in the ongoing trade war between the world’s two largest economies, further complicating international economic relations.
Bloomberg reports that the US and China are preparing for a new round of negotiations aimed at reducing tariffs.
Trump clarified that the current 30% tariff could be raised to 100% if no agreement is reached by November 1.
Despite tensions, Trump expressed optimism, stating that China is showing respect and paying significant tariffs, which benefits the US economy.
Additionally, the US plans to impose export restrictions on critical software starting next month.
China remains America’s third-largest trading partner, after Mexico and Canada, with trade volume last year totaling $438.9 billion in US imports from China and $143.5 billion in exports to China.
Recent efforts by US officials involve proposing a call with Beijing to discuss further restrictions on rare earth exports, though China has refused and accused the US of double standards.
The diplomatic atmosphere remains tense, with reports indicating that Trump also intends to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un soon.
