Possible Offside Rule Changes at the 2026 World Cup: What to Expect from Football’s Future

Chas Pravdy - 19 October 2025 16:28

The International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) is reportedly preparing transformative changes to the game rules that could immediately impact tactics and officiating during the 2026 World Cup.

According to a reliable source, Cadena SER, the organization is considering simplifying the offside rule to reduce controversy and make the game more transparent and fair for teams and fans alike.

Under the proposed modification, a player would be considered offside only if his entire body is closer to the opponent’s goal than the ball and the second-last defender, deviating from the previous rule that considered only parts of the body.

This change aims to ease referees’ decision-making and decrease incorrect calls, which have been a persistent issue in modern football.

The final decision on implementing this change is expected at FIFA’s congress scheduled for March next year.

Notably, the 2026 World Cup will be the most expansive in history, expanding from 32 to 48 teams, and will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The tournament will last 39 days, featuring 104 matches—an all-time record.

The qualification process is already underway, with 28 teams securing their spots to compete for the ultimate football crown.

Additionally, the surprise qualification of Cape Verde’s national team adds excitement to the upcoming competition, showcasing the tournament’s global diversity.
