Germany recalls its ambassador from Georgia amid diplomatic tensions

Chas Pravdy - 19 October 2025 15:18

Germany has officially announced the recall of its ambassador from Georgia, stemming from ongoing diplomatic tensions between the two countries.

The German Foreign Ministry stated that over the past several months, Tbilisi has been actively fueling hostility against the European Union, Germany, and even personally against the ambassador.

In response, the German government decided to send its representative for consultations to discuss further diplomatic steps.

The ministry also indicated that the matter would be addressed at the upcoming EU Foreign Affairs Council.

Recently, Georgia experienced significant political turmoil, particularly during local elections that escalated into large-scale protests.

Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze accused the West of interfering in domestic affairs, while the EU diplomatic service dismissed these claims as unfounded misinformation.

It is expected that under the current political climate, Georgia will not join the European Union anytime soon.

This move sends a clear signal of the increased diplomatic measures taken in response to rising tensions between Tbilisi and Brussels.
