Ukraine plans to initiate locally produced Gripen fighters by 2033

Ukraine’s Minister of Defense, Denys Shmyhal, unveiled an ambitious initiative to establish local production of the Swedish Saab JAS 39 Gripen fighters starting from 2033.

This plan follows the signing of a significant memorandum between a Ukrainian enterprise and the Swedish aerospace company Saab, marking the first step toward manufacturing these advanced combat aircraft within Ukraine’s borders.

The scope of the project extends beyond assembly, including the production of individual components, which promises to invigorate Ukraine’s aviation industry and foster technological development.

Minister Shmyhal revealed that, by 2026, Ukraine aims to receive the first deliveries of Gripen fighters of classes C and D.

Additionally, discussions are underway to commence training programs for Ukrainian pilots and technicians as early as next year, ensuring the workforce is prepared for the integration of the new aircraft.

An important aspect of the initiative is the creation of two working groups: one technical, responsible for the preparation of equipment and manufacturing processes, and another financial, tasked with overseeing the contract negotiations and funding.

Shmyhal emphasized that this contract could become the largest in European aviation history, and meticulous preparation is essential for its success.

The Saab JAS 39 Gripen is a modern, multi-role Swedish fighter known for its agility, advanced electronics, and capability for short takeoffs, utilized for air combat, ground strikes, and reconnaissance.

Recently, Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced an agreement with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to potentially supply 100–150 Gripen E fighters, indicating a strengthening of defense cooperation between the two countries amid ongoing geopolitical challenges.
