Sweden considers financing options for purchasing Gripen fighters for Ukraine’s Armed Forces

Military and diplomatic cooperation between Ukraine and Sweden is entering a new phase as Stockholm explores ways to support Kyiv in acquiring modern fighter jets.

According to Reuters, Swedish officials are discussing the possibility of assisting Ukraine in funding the purchase of Gripen E multirole fighters.

This support could take the form of military aid already extended to Ukraine, as well as financing through export credits or the use of frozen Russian assets.

Swedish Defense Minister Peter Johnson confirmed that talks are progressing, emphasizing close collaboration between the two countries.

Additionally, other members of the ‘Coalition of the Willing,’ such as the United Kingdom — which supplies engines and various critical components for the Gripen jets — may also participate in funding efforts.

It is important to note that in October, Ukraine signed an agreement with Sweden to purchase up to 150 Gripen E fighters, with the first deliveries expected as early as next year.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted that the Gripen jets are among the best in the world and are a priority for the Ukrainian armed forces, underscoring the strategic importance of this deal for Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
