Belarusian ‘Oresnik’ missile system: a new threat to Ukraine and the region

Chas Pravdy - 07 November 2025 12:47

In recent weeks, discussions have intensified among military and political circles in Ukraine and neighboring countries regarding the deployment of Belarusian medium-range missile systems ‘Oresnik’ in the Mozyr region of Belarus.

According to sources, this highly precise weaponry could significantly bolster Lukashenko’s military capabilities and pose an additional threat to Ukraine and Europe.

Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko openly threatened to use the ‘Oresnik’ system against Western opponents, raising alarm in Kyiv and Western capitals.

Experts warn that最大的 danger lies not only in the potential missile strikes but also in the limited response time of Ukraine’s air defense systems and the difficulties in detecting these fast-moving targets.

The ‘Oresnik’ was first used in November 2024 — a missile traveling at high speed in the upper atmosphere, making it harder for Ukrainian air defenses to intercept.

With the potential deployment of these systems in Belarus by the end of 2025, Ukraine’s security outlook worsens: Russia could launch faster and more precise attacks on critical infrastructure.

Minsk’s proximity—just 440 kilometers from Kyiv—and Moscow’s 1500 kilometers distance allow missile launches from Belarus to make the conflict more deadly.

Last summer, Ukraine neutralized one of the three ‘Oresnik’ systems, but intelligence reports indicate Russia plans to place additional units in the Mozyr region of Belarus, just 120-140 km from Ukraine’s border and 200 km from Lithuania — NATO and EU member countries.

This development escalates the threat level and introduces new challenges for Ukraine’s defense and international security.
