Ukraine Restores Strategic Gas Route: What the Reopening of the Transbalkan Pipeline Means

Chas Pravdy - 05 November 2025 17:52

At the end of autumn, Ukraine reclaimed an important gas corridor that provides the country with an alternative energy route through the Balkan Peninsula to Greece.

This move has become crucial for stabilizing the energy sector, especially amid extensive infrastructure damages caused by Russian attacks.

According to Reuters on November 5, the restart of gas imports via the Transbalkan route marks a significant step in strengthening Ukraine’s energy security during the winter months.

This is particularly relevant given that Ukrainian gas reservoirs are less than half full, and additional supplies are expected to ensure the stable operation of heating and electricity systems.

The route transports gas through Moldova, Romania, and Bulgaria, with capacity reservations made by companies such as Ukrainian DTEK, Swiss Axpo, and Greek DEPA Commercial, all reserving up to 0.6 million cubic meters daily.

Domestic imports from neighboring countries remain significant, with Ukraine receiving about 23 million cubic meters daily from Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia.

Although the route was inactive in September and October, the reduction in transit tariffs and increased demand for capacity bookings in November offer hope for stabilization.

Experts warn that Russian attacks continue to damage compressor stations, complicating the restoration of Ukraine’s internal gas production and infrastructure.

Full recovery of compressor facilities and extraction capabilities could take 15 to 18 months, impacting the country’s energy security during this critical period.
