Romania buys 18 F-16 fighter jets for symbolic one-euro price to train Ukrainian pilots
On Monday, November 3, the Romanian Ministry of Defense announced the signing of a historic agreement with the Netherlands for the purchase of 18 modern F-16 fighter jets and essential equipment.
This deal represents a significant step forward in the development of the regional aviation training center in Fetesti, which is rapidly establishing itself as the primary platform for pilot training from NATO member countries and their partners.
According to Defense Minister Ionuț Mureșanu, the aircraft were purchased at a symbolic price of just one euro, demonstrating a strategic commitment to regional cooperation and security.
He emphasized that these fighters will be used exclusively for training purposes, including the training of Ukrainian pilots, who will have access to this state-of-the-art facility.
The minister highlighted that this move is an investment in the future of regional defense cooperation, strengthening security for Ukraine and neighboring countries.
The initiative to establish the training center is supported by other NATO nations, and the first batch of F-16s was provided by the Netherlands in November 2023.
Notably, after the Dutch Air Force retired its F-16s, the country shifted to modern F-35 aircraft, some of which are expected to be transferred to Ukraine to bolster its defensive capabilities.
