In one of Mexico’s most dangerous regions, the state of Michoacán, a tragic incident occurred during a public event dedicated to celebrating the Day of the Dead.

The mayor of Uruapan, Carlos Manso, was brutally killed in a shooting attack that took place on Saturday evening.

According to local law enforcement sources and the Associated Press, the attack was sudden, with the assailant firing seven shots at the mayor who was present at the event.

The gunshot injuries proved fatal, and he was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to his wounds.

Witnesses report that during the attack, a member of the city council and the mayor’s security guard were also injured.

The local prosecutor stated that the perpetrator was neutralized at the scene and that the shooter was unknown, though involved in conflicts between criminal groups vying for control over the region.

California’s security minister Garcia Harfuch explained that the weapon used was linked to two armed clashes between rival cartels operating in Michoacán.

The region is among the most perilous in the country, plagued by violence and corruption.

Carlos Manso was elected mayor in September 2024 and was known for personally patrolling in body armor with security forces.

In June, he shared a video on social media from such patrols, calling on federal authorities to take stronger measures to combat violent crime.

The murder of the mayor highlights the ongoing security crisis in the region and underscores the urgent need for intensified efforts to combat criminal organizations.
