War victims: 116 journalists have died in Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion
Since the start of Russia’s large-scale military aggression against Ukraine in February 2022, the number of journalists who lost their lives while performing their professional duties has reached 116.
Among them are not only Ukrainian reporters but also foreign journalists who risked their lives to reveal the truth and cover military events.
Of these, 18 journalists died directly during filming or reporting the extent of Russian aggression.
Additionally, at least 26 Ukrainian media workers remain in Russian captivity, and one reporter has joined the Ukrainian defense forces.
According to data from the National Council of Ukraine on Television and Radio Broadcasting, this number continues to grow daily, sparking deep concern among the international journalism community.
During a memorial event organized for the Day of Fighting Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, Ukrainian authorities called on global partners to pay more attention to the catastrophic situation caused by Russian aggression.
Data from the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications shows that by May 2025, Ukraine had lost an additional 201 artists and 103 media workers, highlighting the scale of the tragedy.
The war has also brought tragic incidents such as the death of French journalist Antoine Lallikan in a drone attack, and journalist Georgiy Ivanchenkov was wounded.
Furthermore, on October 23 in Kramatorsk, Ukraine, journalist Olen Gubanova and operator Yevhen Kurmazin were killed in a drone attack by the Russian “Lance” UAV.
These incidents underscore the ongoing dangers faced by Ukrainian journalists working in conflict zones, where their lives remain at serious risk.
