Russian Navy Adds New Nuclear Submarine ‘Khabarovsk’ Capable of Deploying Poseidon Torpedoes
In a significant development for Russia’s military capabilities, the country has launched its new multi-purpose nuclear submarine, ‘Khabarovsk,’ constructed at the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk, located near the Finnish border.
This event marks a notable milestone in the nation’s naval arms race, as the submarine is equipped to carry up to 12 powerful nuclear torpedoes of the ‘Poseidon’ type.
According to official Russian defense sources, these autonomous nuclear systems are designed to strike targets across the entire globe, including distant oceanic territories, greatly enhancing Russia’s strategic military posture.
Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu emphasized that this vessel, integrated with advanced weaponry and robotic systems, aims to secure maritime borders and protect Russia’s national interests in a volatile geopolitical climate.
International observers, including the German publication Die Zeit, have highlighted military activity near NATO’s Belgian base, where nuclear weapons are stored.
Meanwhile, recent reports confirm that Russia has intensified its use of the 9M729 cruise missile against Ukraine, capable of carrying nuclear or conventional warheads.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga has verified the missile’s deployment, revealing that approximately 23 such launches have occurred since August 2023.
The ongoing escalation of Russia’s nuclear and conventional weapons programs continues to escalate global tensions amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
