Reburial of Polish Soldiers in Lviv Region: A Crucial Step Toward Revealing Historical Truths

Chas Pravdy - 02 November 2025 15:33

The process of reburial of Polish military remains who perished in 1939 during World War II is ongoing in the Lviv region of Ukraine.

These remains were exhumed in August of this year and are part of a broader initiative carried out through collaboration between Ukrainian and Polish authorities and search groups.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry and specialized teams are actively working to identify, locate, and organize the reburial of these fallen soldiers, symbolizing a mutual commitment to justice and historical truth.

According to Ukraine’s ambassador to Poland, Vasyl Bodnar, this effort is a significant step toward reconciliation and overcoming tense periods in bilateral relations stemming from the war’s legacy.

Search and exhumation activities are conducted in various regions, including Lviv, Ternopil, and Podkarpackie, with approximately 40 to 50 sets of remains recovered, though final figures await DNA testing.

The subsequent step involves reburials at Polish military cemeteries, particularly in Mostyska, where memorial sites for Polish soldiers already exist, emphasizing respect and shared history.

Officials from both countries are working jointly to improve procedures, plan future excavations, and standardize protocols.

Political leaders support these initiatives, recognizing their importance not only for establishing historical truth but also for strengthening friendly relations between Ukraine and Poland.

This ongoing collaboration demonstrates a mutual dedication to honoring the memory of those who sacrificed their lives and fostering enduring partnership between the two nations.
