Dam on dam: can Russians trigger a tsunami for Kyiv — ‘Flash’
In the context of ongoing warfare and increasing threats to Ukraine, questions arise about the possibility of Russia employing destructive tactics against critical infrastructure.
Of particular concern is the potential for a man-made tsunami, allegedly capable of being triggered by Russian special services to produce catastrophic consequences in the capital city.
Experts warn that to generate a 10-meter-high wave, an attack on the Kyiv Hydroelectric Dam would require using nuclear weapons or equivalents.
Ukrainian radio-electronic and communications specialist Sergey Beskrestnov emphasizes in his analysis that even advanced weaponry like the ‘Oreshnik’ is unlikely to accomplish such a scenario.
Nevertheless, he stresses the importance of not underestimating the threat, as Russia possesses detailed knowledge of Ukraine’s vulnerabilities dating back to Soviet times.
Damaging or breaching the dam’s critical infrastructure could easily cause a water leak, raising water levels and flooding low-lying areas of the city.
Beskrestnov concludes that Russia is capable of orchestrating such an attack, but the creation of a tsunami with thousands of casualties remains improbable, though theoretically possible.
Reports indicate that the Belgorod dam breach already caused flooding around Shebekino, and similar threats persist in the Kharkiv region’s Vovchan district, underscoring the ongoing danger to strategic sites in the region.
