Audacious Louvre Robbery: Were Amateur Thieves Able to Avoid Professional Criminals?

Chas Pravdy - 02 November 2025 17:26

Last month, a high-profile incident shocked Paris — armed criminals carried out a daring theft at the world-famous Louvre Museum, causing damages exceeding 102 million dollars.

However, according to Parisian prosecutors, this crime was not committed by a professional organized group but by amateur street criminals, raising many questions about their planning and execution.Prosecutor Laure Becuoi revealed on franceinfo radio that the offenders acted clumsily and fled quickly, leaving behind traces of their activity.

She added that the accomplices reside in the Seine-Saint-Denis district, one of the poorest areas of the French capital.

It is reported that only two suspects have admitted some guilt, while the main thief remains at large. It is noteworthy that during their escape, the robbers lost the most valuable item — the Empress Eugénie crown, and also left behind tools and other items at the scene.

Interestingly, they did not burn the vehicle used in the getaway, which further underscores their amateurish approach. The attack took place early on Sunday, October 19, when two men used a forklift to access the second floor of the museum, broke a window, and smashed display cases with angle grinders.

They then escaped on scooters driven by two accomplices.

The entire operation lasted less than seven minutes.Police have detained four suspects so far, but the valuables remain missing.

Some of the detainees have partially confessed, and investigations into all circumstances of the incident continue.
