Russian Shelling in Sumy Region: Over Five Hundred Attacks with Casualties and Destruction
Since the beginning of 2025, the Sumy region and nearby communities have been subjected to frequent and massive attacks by Russian forces, employing various types of weaponry to increase pressure on the Ukrainian population.
According to the Sumy City Military Administration (MVA), from January to the present, Russia has carried out over 540 individual attacks.
Currently, there have been 543 recorded attacks, which is four times more than during the same period last year.
The most common weapon used by Russian troops has been drones — over 450 launches, representing a significant portion of all attacks.
Additionally, there have been aerial strikes with guided bombs — 38 instances, artillery shelling with multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) — 28 times, missile launches — 16, and artillery shelling — 6 cases.According to the MVA, August was the most deadly month of the year, with 111 attacks happening within just one month.
As a result of these attacks, 72 residents of Sumy have died, and 434 have been injured.
The region’s infrastructure has also suffered significant damage: 303 non-residential buildings were damaged, with 27 completely destroyed.
Regarding residential areas, 494 private homes have been damaged, 25 were completely destroyed, and 245 multi-story buildings sustained varying degrees of damage.
The extent of destruction, especially in residential sectors, further complicates the humanitarian situation in the region.
