Russian Attacks Disrupt Ukraine’s Energy Security: Power Plant Damages and Massive Missile Strikes

Chas Pravdy - 31 October 2025 09:26

As a result of renewed Russian aggression, Ukraine’s energy infrastructure has suffered significant damage.

During the nighttime assault on October 30, several critical facilities, including substations vital for nuclear safety and stable operation, were hit.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that two Ukrainian nuclear power plants—South Ukraine and Khmelnytsky—lost access to one of their primary external power lines, increasing nuclear safety risks.

Additionally, the Rivne Nuclear Power Plant reduced the output of two of its four reactors at the network operator’s request, indicating the severity of the situation.

IAEA Director Rafael Grossi emphasized that nuclear security threats remain persistent and real.

“I renew my call for maximum military restraint near nuclear facilities and full adherence to the seven fundamental principles of nuclear safety and security,” he stated.

On the night of Thursday, Russian forces launched a massive missile and drone attack on energy infrastructure across multiple regions of Ukraine, leading to planned emergency blackouts and subsequent scheduled power outages nationwide to stabilize the electricity supply.
