Lives at risk: Five people killed on Zhytomyr region due to landmine dangers
On a tragic day marked by devastating incidents in Zhytomyr region, multiple explosions related to landmines caused severe casualties.
A vehicle explosion on the border areas resulted in the death of five men aged between 19 and 65 years.
Two other individuals were seriously wounded and hospitalized.
According to police reports, the incident occurred when local residents in a UAZ vehicle attempted to bypass designated warning signs while moving along the border during logging activities and inadvertently encountered a landmine.
Additionally, another event took place the same day: two local men transporting forest products on a ZIL truck struck a mine, injuring one of them.
Authorities repeatedly warn that areas previously affected by hostilities or located near the border pose ongoing risks due to ongoing demining operations and the presence of hazards.
Warning signs reading “Stop! Mines!” are posted in many locations, and safety protocols must be strictly followed.
Unauthorized visits to forests and border zones, especially within 30 km of the border, remain prohibited.
The work of modern demining technologies plays a crucial role in making these regions safer.
Meanwhile, the danger extends beyond conflict zones — summer incidents in Odessa beaches, in particular in Karlino-Buzhazh and Zatochi, where three people died after coming into contact with naval mines.
This underscores the deadly risks posed by unexploded devices in non-war zones, beaches, fields, and forests, emphasizing the need for caution and adherence to safety regulations.
