Poland postpones border reopening with Belarus following tense talks with Lithuania
A significant development in the tense regional relations involving Poland, Belarus, and Lithuania occurred as Warsaw officially agreed to delay the reopening of its border crossings with Belarus.
This decision came after extensive diplomatic discussions between the Polish government and Lithuanian representatives, especially following Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s statements earlier this week, which raised concerns among neighboring countries.
The pivotal issue was the recent incidents involving unidentified flying balloons launched from Belarus, which violated Polish airspace and caused the closure of airports in Lithuania.
Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry emphasized that Poland’s decision to postpone the border opening is a crucial step toward stabilizing the situation and preventing potential hybrid attacks.
Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene stated that she had a detailed and comprehensive conversation with Tusk to coordinate actions between Warsaw and Vilnius.
She also stressed that Lithuania will not tolerate hybrid threats and will take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of its citizens.
Additionally, Lithuanian authorities are prepared to shoot down any subsequent balloons from Belarus if similar incidents occur again, aiming to prevent further escalation and safeguard national security.
