Hungarian Prime Minister Suggests External Cause for Oil Refinery Fire

Chas Pravdy - 30 October 2025 15:51

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán made a significant statement regarding the recent fire at the country’s main oil refinery in Szaadhalom.

According to the politician, the investigation into this extraordinary incident is currently ongoing.

Orbán expressed the possibility that the cause of the fire could have been triggered by an external factor—specifically, an external attack.

In his Facebook post, he stated: ‘The investigation is ongoing.

We do not yet have a definitive answer whether it was an accident, technical malfunction, or an intentional external act.’ It is important to note that the government official also referred to statements made by Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, who recently advised the Ukrainian side, during a discussion, to carry out sabotage against infrastructure, including blowing up the Druzhba pipeline.

Orbán expressed hope that such a scenario would not come to pass and emphasized the importance of an objective investigation.

The fire occurred during the night of October 21 at one of Hungary’s largest oil refining plants in Szaadhalom.

The blaze was localized by firefighters by midday, though the damage was significant.

This refinery is the only major facility in Hungary that processes oil mainly imported from Russia, adding potential motives for various interested parties involved in this incident.
