Romania Responds to US Troop Reduction Plans: Security Remains Strengthened

Chas Pravdy - 29 October 2025 18:32

Romanian President, Nicolae Ciucă, has publicly addressed the recent announcements from the United States regarding a reduction in their military presence in the country.

According to President Ciucă, the Pentagon’s decision to withdraw a portion of American troops will bring the number of military personnel back to levels established before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

He reassured that this change would not diminish Romania’s security or its position on NATO’s eastern flank.

Instead, he emphasized that efforts to counter threats on this front are being maintained through enhanced European military deployments and increased support from American allies, ensuring a balanced and coordinated defense strategy.

Ciucă also highlighted that the strategic partnership between Romania and the US remains unchanged, with American forces continuing to operate at established bases, and military equipment transfers ongoing.

The Romanian Defense Ministry confirmed that, in line with recent media reports, the US plans to shrink its troop presence in Europe but clarified that this does not amount to a full withdrawal, rather a strategic reallocation of forces aimed at optimizing regional security cooperation.
